The last dance
Twenty-one years in celeste and white
He made his debut at 18 against Hungary and was sent off within two minutes of coming on. Twenty-one years later he left as Argentina's most capped player and its all-time top scorer, with a World Cup, two Copa Américas and a Finalissima in the cabinet.
His final match came on 19 July 2026, a World Cup final at MetLife Stadium, the same ground where he had lost the 2016 Copa América final ten years earlier. Spain won it 1–0 in extra time. Six weeks later, on 31 August 2026, he announced his retirement from international football. This shirt belongs to that final era, and carries his signature on the number he made his own.
